Russia begins using three-ton bomb against Ukraine

This Saturday (3), Russia begins using three-ton bombs, called FAB-3000 against Ukraine, which transformed free-fall munitions into guided devices that reach long distances.

This new equipment, called the universal planning and correction module (UMPK), was made by Russia and began to be installed at the beginning of last year. Initially it was used in smaller bombs, but shortly afterwards it was developed into a larger bomb.

According to O Globo, smaller bombs were initially manufactured, but shortly after the country produced the FAB-3000 model, which is more powerful, larger and heavier and can reach long distances. In its traditional form, it would have been made for larger structures that required more power in the instrument, although it has rarely been used in conflicts against Ukraine. In March, Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defense minister, resumed production of these bombs.

Bomb Drop

On June 20, TASS reported that the FAB-3000 bomb had been dropped in the Kharkiv region. In July, the Russian Defense Ministry released a video showing the bomb being dropped on Ukraine. The FAB-3000 M-54 bomb has the capacity to carry about 1,400 kilograms of explosives. It would not be difficult to understand why it would be attractive to Moscow. The Russian Air Force uses this device to attack defensive points in Ukraine, making it easier for Russian soldiers to advance into Ukrainian territory. As a result of the use of this bomb, 3,500 glide bombs are being dropped every month, says John Hardie, deputy director of the Russia Program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, in an article on superbombs. First, the bomb is seen being loaded onto a Sukhoi Su-34 and the Russian Air Force manning it. Then, the video of the bomb being dropped toward the target is shown.
