Russia would have fired hypersonic missiles
Russia claims that last week it fired so-called hypersonic missiles at targets in Ukraine for the first time. What kind of weapons are these and what makes these missiles so dangerous?
Part of the answer lies in the name of the missiles. Hypersonic indicates that they are much faster than regular long-range weapons or even fighter jets. Fighter planes or the famous passenger plane the Concorde are ‘only’ supersonic. That is, they are faster than the sound.
Such speeds are indicated by a mach number. From mach 1 (more than 1,200 kilometers per hour) you are above the speed of sound.
The hypersonic missiles go at least five times faster than the sound (mach 5). “The dagger,” as the Russians call their hypersonic missile, may be much faster.
Because hypersonic missiles are so fast, it is virtually impossible for defense systems to intercept them. The approach route of such missiles is also different from that of, for example, a ballistic missile.
Simply put, hypersonic missiles are not fired at their target with a bow, but fly lower and in a straighter line. As a result, for example, you have nothing to do with the well-known Patriot air defense system, which the Netherlands also uses.
Defense system may take several years
In addition, a hypersonic missile can change course along the way. And because hypersonic missiles are so fast, the impact is literally and figuratively a lot bigger.
Because of these difficulties, according to American defense sources, it will take a few more years before a defense system is ready that has a chance against a hypersonic missile.
Russia would have fired hypersonic missiles
Russia is not the only country with hypersonic missiles, but it may be the first to have the weapon combat-ready. The missiles of the United States and China are still in the test phase. North Korea also claims to have carried out test launches.
