The shelling and capture of the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia by the Russians was called “reckless” on several sides . US ministers Jennifer Granholm (Energy) and Antony Blinken (Foreign Affairs), NATO boss Jens Stoltenberg and Prime Minister Mark Rutte , among others , used that description.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky once again called on NATO to intervene quickly. An explosion at the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, he says, would mean “the end of Europe”.
Russia’s attack on nuclear power plant
IAEA director Rafael Grossi called on Russia to adhere to the “international principle” never to attack nuclear facilities . He stressed that the nuclear plant’s safety systems are working and that no radioactive material or radiation was released in the attack. He described the situation in the area as “unstable and tense”.
Grossi reported that two guards at the nuclear power plant were injured in the attack. He also confirmed that the projectile that hit the nuclear power plant came from Russian troops.
NATO and the EU will meet again on Friday to discuss the situation in Ukraine . Minister Wopke Hoekstra (Foreign Affairs) is present at both meetings on behalf of the Netherlands .
Very exceptionally, Blinken also joins the EU consultations. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kubela is also present via video link.
NATO talks, among other things, about what the organization can do further against Russia. Military action is no longer ruled out.
Meanwhile, major Ukrainian cities remain under heavy pressure . Explosions were reported in several places as a result of bombing and shelling by Russian troops.
New explosions are reported in Kiev and Kharkov, but those cities are still in Ukrainian hands. So is Mariupol, but the southern port city is surrounded by Russian troops and is under heavy shelling.
Russian troops entered Mykolaiv for the first time. The regional governor reports that fighting is taking place in several places in the southern port city.
The death toll from airstrikes on Chernihiv turns out to be greater than expected. Local emergency services of the northern Ukrainian city report that 47 people were killed in Thursday’s bombing. Previously, 33 deaths were reported.
Due to the constant shelling of the city, rescuers had to temporarily stop their work on Thursday. As a result, some victims were not found until Friday.
The next round of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia is not announced in advance . So said Oleksiy Arestovych, the adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The third round of negotiations between the parties would take place early next week, according to delegations. On Thursday, the location and time of the talks were also announced just before the start.
