Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra unites
Samsung has shaken up its phone series in the top segment. The Galaxy Note series has come to an end, but there’s good news for users looking for the best cameras and swear by a stylus: the Galaxy S22 Ultra has it all.
For years, Samsung released a new phone in the top segment twice a year. In the spring a Galaxy S, in the autumn a Galaxy Note. There was initially a clear distinction between the phones. The Note was a lot bigger than the Galaxy S and in combination with the S Pen, samsung’s stylus, it was very suitable for taking notes, for example.
The distinction became smaller and smaller. That’s mainly because phones generally got bigger and bigger screens over the years. That also applied to the Samsung Galaxy S phones. In the end, almost the only difference was the S Pen.
With the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung serves both the S and Note camps. The phone has a large and bright screen (6.8 inches) and an S Pen, but also the necessary improvements in, for example, the cameras, as you are used to from an S-phone.
But in general, the S22 Ultra feels mainly like a Note device. This is mainly due to its shape. Just like the Note 20 Ultra, this device has round sides and a flat bottom, where the pen goes in and out. The other phones in the S22 line, the S22 and the S22 Plus, have their own face.

Few innovative cameras, but still top notch
That difference can also be seen at the back. The regular S22 (Plus) has a one-piece camera island, while each of the S22 Ultra’s four lenses and a laser autofocus sensor come loose from the case. It saves a lumpy bump, but the lenses catch a lot of dust all around. A case solves that problem.
The cameras themselves are top quality, just like with the Samsung S21 Ultra. However, the improvements are very small. With the wide-angle lens, you now catch a little more in frame, but otherwise little has changed in the hardware. The optical 3x and 10x zoom readings are still top notch, while 100x zooming in still gives grainy results.
There are some improvements in the software. The portrait mode has been updated and that (again) produces beautiful portraits, with a sharp subject and faded background. Samsung does that a lot better than many other phone makers. The night mode has also been improved to capture more details in the dark.
The results are generally fine, but no earth-shattering progress has been made.

S Pen is faster
And then the S Pen. The stylus offers all the note’s familiar options, such as taking notes, annotating screenshots, or controlling the smartphone camera remotely. It is striking how fast the pen is on the screen these days. Delay in writing or drawing is virtually absent.
While the stylus has been added and thus takes up space in the case, there’s no skimping on the phone’s performance. For example, it has a 5,000 mAh battery, with which you can easily get through the day. We always ended up with around 30 percent at the end of the day.
If your battery is empty earlier, you can charge it with a fast charger (which you have to buy separately) with 45 watts in twenty minutes to 50 percent.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra costs 1,249 euros. You don’t have to spend that amount on a new phone if you bought a Galaxy S21 Ultra last year. The improvements are too small for that.
But it was a logical step to merge the S and Note line so that the best of both phones come together. The fact that it does not produce a completely new device only confirms how much the phones already resembled each other.
The S22 Ultra is a sum of all the good that Samsung has to offer and is therefore recommended, especially if you really can not do without an S Pen and these cameras.
