São Paulo surpasses 2023 campaign in the Brasileirão

São Paulo beat Bahia 3-0 last Tuesday (05) and surpassed the points they obtained last season, even with six rounds remaining in the Brazilian Championship. Under Luis Zubeldía's command, Tricolor managed to score 54 points in the 32nd round, surpassing the 53 points obtained throughout the 2023 season.

History of overcoming

Even after a sequence of many matches when competing in the Copa do Brasil and Libertadores, São Paulo was not discouraged by the eliminations and reacted well in the Brazilian Championship. Last year, when it was still under the command of Dorival Jr., the team won the Copa do Brasil against Flamengo in September. This year, Tricolor fought, but fell in the quarterfinals of both cups, being eliminated by Botafogo in the Libertadores and by Grêmio in the Copa do Brasil.

Since being eliminated in the continental competition, the team has managed to record three wins, one draw and one defeat in the Brasileirão. The victories that most excited the fans were against rival Corinthians, beaten 3-1 at Morumbi, and over Bahia, led by tricolor idol Rogério Ceni, at Fonte Nova. In a good phase, São Paulo has already managed to achieve its best campaign in the national championship in the last five years.

Remaining clashes

São Paulo still has 18 points to play for until the end of the championship. Zubeldía's squad projection seeks a position that guarantees direct access to the Libertadores group stage. Tricolor will face three teams fighting to continue in series A: Athletico-PR, RB Bragantino and Juventude. Grêmio is the opponent in the middle of the table.

In the penultimate round, the São Paulo team will face Atlético Mineiro, who will be on the eve of the Libertadores final. The last match will be against Botafogo, which is also in contention for the continental cup and could reach the last round already champion of the Brazilian championship. The confrontation with the championship leader is scheduled for December 8th and could be important for São Paulo to define how they will compete in the Libertadores next season.
