Schmidt proudly says goodbye at PSV –

Although Roger Schmidt also saw the title go to Ajax in his second year at PSV, he said goodbye with a satisfied feeling on Sunday after the 1-2 away win over PEC Zwolle. The German picked up this season with the Eindhoven team the KNVB cup and the Johan Cruijff Scale.

“I think we’ve had a very good season, also in the Eredivisie,” Schmidt told ESPN. “We finish with a total of 81 points, that’s a lot.”

PSV stayed in the footsteps of Ajax for a long time in the title battle, but knew since Wednesday that it had to settle for second place, just like last season. As a result, the final game against the already relegated PEC was only for the honor.

“Many players were tired after a long season and PEC did everything to say an honorable farewell to the Eredivisie after the relegation,” Schmidt explained the difficult performance of his team. “But we were still able to win. I’m proud of my players.”

‘Was a great honour to work at PSV’

Schmidt could have stayed longer at PSV, but announced shortly after the winter break that he would not renew his contract. The 55-year-old coach has reached an agreement in principle with Benfica, where he will start after the summer.

“It’s over now, it was a great honor for me to work at PSV,” said Schmidt, who will be succeeded in Eindhoven by Ruud van Nistelrooij. “I’m glad that Toon Gerbrands and John de Jong believed in me and got me at the time. It was a great period for me as a trainer and as a person.”

Schmidt and PSV therefore separate in good harmony. “I will always have a very good feeling about this club and these players. It is also important to say goodbye in a pleasant way, which I have learned in my coaching career.”
