Scream VI gets a release date and director comments on Neve Campbell’s absence

One of the biggest horror franchises in history seems to be more alive than ever, even with some absences. The Scream saga marked the end of the nineties by mixing horror with a touch of comic relief, this influence was so strong that the main character even became a carnival and Halloween costume.

After an eleven-year hiatus, the franchise was reborn in early 2022 with Scream 5, and a new sequel was recently announced. But this time, without the protagonist of the story.

Neve Campbell played the protagonist Sidney Prescott during the five films in the saga, but left the sixth production after receiving a salary offer that did not match the importance of her role. According to director Tyler Gillett, the actress' absence completely affected the script for the new film, which needed to be readapted and bring in new characters. “We loved Neve and Sidney, but it felt like an opportunity to really explore this new crop of characters and I think audiences will be happy with how well this film does that.”. Regarding the original cast, only Courteney Cox will participate in the sequel. To complete the team, Jenna Ortega (Wandinha, X), Liana Liberato (Confiar: Perigo Online) and Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers) were included in the cast.

The sixth film in the saga received its first teaser and will be announced on March 11th next year. The story is based on the lives of Ghostface survivors trying to make a new life outside the city of Woodsboro. The director stated that “Scream 6 has been in our lives for quite a while, but I think we're still consistently surprised by how rich, interesting and deep the relationships between the four (protagonists) in this film are.” The production is highly anticipated, being directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, with a script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

Considering the influence of the Scream franchise and its cultural weight, it is to be expected that the story will continue to be explored in new productions, but with a more updated approach to current times. Furthermore, with the advent of the internet, everything indicates that the saga can reach new audiences and remake itself as the classic it always was.
