SD card won't open on PC? See what to do

In addition to the pen drive, there are other hardware devices that store computer files, such as SD cards. However, it is possible that some models present an error and the PC prevents the software from opening. So what to do?

We have put together a list of possible solutions to help you with an SD card that won't open on your PC. Suggestions range from changing hardware configuration to updating drivers. Check out more information below.

Check if the card is blocked

Some SD card models — especially those from SanDisk — have an interesting feature: a physical lock that locks the card. In this case, the blocking is caused by a type of switch, mounted on the card structure, which prevents it from being read properly.

The solution is very simple: look for a lock on the side of the card and move it upwards. This should “open” the lock and allow the card to be read.

Make sure it is securely fitted

The SD card or SD adapter (which fits a microSD card) must fit perfectly inside the slot to be read. If you inserted it and the computer couldn't find it, you might want to use your index finger to gently push the card into the slot.

In the case of an SD adapter, make sure the microSD card is securely seated inside the adapter, or the connection will not work. If possible, it is also worth testing the same SD card on other devices to check whether it is recognized or not.

Clean properly

Debris (such as sand and dust) and oil can interfere with the correct reading of chips and connection cables. If possible, use a microfiber cloth to clean the gold part of the card and the PC slot region.

Then try connecting the hardware to the computer again and wait to see if the device is recognized this time.

Check if the card has been activated

Some SD cards require manual activation. To do this, you can insert the card into the PC; then click on the Windows search bar, search for “Device Manager” and select the software.

Then go to the portable devices category and look for the SD card. If you don't see it, click the “Action” > “Scan for hardware changes” button. If the card appears as detected, right-click on it and select “Properties” > “Driver” > “Activate device”.

It is also worth updating the drivers: still with the manager open, right-click on the device again and select the “Update drivers” option.

Use the system to find the SD card

A properly working SD card can be found by your computer system. To do this, give the function Windows+Rtype diskmgmt.msc in the text bar and click OK.

If the card has appeared in the system even though your PC's folders cannot detect it, you may need to assign a drive letter to the hardware. It's simple: as soon as the search result appears, search for the device, right-click on it and select “Change drive letter”.

Additionally, it is important to run the CHKDSK check: a scan that helps detect errors. So, after changing the drive letter, right-click the card again and go to Properties > Tools > Scan and Repair.

Format the SD card

This is the most radical option, but if none of the other alternatives have any effect on the SD card, you may need to format it.

If the files saved in it make no difference, then start the formatting process: give the function Windows+Rtype diskmgmt.msc in the search field, click OK, locate the hardware, right-click on it and select the “Format” option.
