Seu Jorge talks about attacks during a show in Porto Alegre: “racist rudeness”
Seu Jorge spoke out for the first time about the racist attacks he suffered during a performance in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, last Friday (14). The musician published a nine-minute video on his social network where he explains and repudiates what happened.
In the video published on his Instagram, Seu Jorge appears accompanied by the flag of the state of Rio Grande do Sul on a big screen in the background and says that he was hired by the social club Grêmio Náutico União for a performance restricted to members only, which he was excited to do, as it had been a while since he had performed with his full band in Porto Alegre.
Seu Jorge begins the video praising the state that he says has welcomed him so well so many times before, remembering, among other great names that came from the state, Elis Regina, “In my humble opinion as a fan, the greatest Brazilian singer of all time”he declares.
“We will be in the fight together, denouncing and combating all types of typification of our people and responding with excellence, preparation, courage, wisdom and diplomacy,” he stressed. (Reproduction/Instagram)
The occasion was a gala dinner, with very well-dressed people and the artist did not notice any black people at the dinner, only among the staff, who he heard were forbidden to look at or speak to him when he arrived at the venue. When he was backstage, the musician heard boos and insults, that was when he realized he could not do his famous “bis”, but still returned to the stage for his thanks.
“What I mean is that I didn’t recognize the city that I had learned to love and respect.” he lamented and added that what he witnessed was “a lot of gratuitous hate, a lot of racist rudeness”.
Seu Jorge thanked the other people for their protests and stated that the connection with the people of the city has not been broken and will not be broken. The artist from Rio also encouraged involvement in social movements to combat racism and all forms of prejudice and discrimination.
