Shakira is emotional when she receives an honorary award at the 2023 VMAs

One of the main awards shows in the music world is taking place today (12). The Video Music Awards, better known as the VMAs, are being celebrated for the first time on a Tuesday, directly from New Jersey, in the United States. The 2023 ceremony is being hosted by rapper Nicki Minaj and broadcast on MTV and Pluto TV from 9pm Brasília time.

“Video Vanguard Award”

Shakira was honored on the night when she received the honorary “Video Vanguard Award”, which is given to recognize the artist's notable contributions to music and the impact made on popular culture through his art. She also delivered a performance with several hits from her career, including current songs such as the most recent success in partnership with Bzrp “Music Sessions, Vol. 53”. During her speech, Shakira was moved and thanked everyone, including her children, Milan and Sasha.

The history of the category

This category was established in the debut edition of the VMA ceremony in 1984, where the Beatles and Richard Lester were the pioneers of the category for “inventing music videos”. In 1986, Madonna became the first female artist to receive the award. In 1991, the award was renamed and began to bear the name of Michael Jackson, who won the category in 1988 and is still recognized today as an important part of music history.
