Stella McCartney – British designer Stella McCartney, well known for investing in sustainable fashion in her production materials for her collections, brought her label’s latest innovation to the world. According to the brand sponsor, LVMH “Stella is using the world’s first sustainable BioSequins (BioSequins) material”. The material developed from a pioneering technology to create sequins can be seen in the April issue of Vogue US, where model, eco-activist and friend of the house Cara Delevigne poses wearing a beautiful bespoke jumpsuit covered in sequins.

Since 2010, Stella McCartney has been a PVC-free brand, aiming to use only recycled, recyclable and biobased alternatives. Conventional sequins are made from plastic, often Mylar or PVC, materials that carry significant environmental and health risks, as well as contributing to a significant percentage of microplastics in the oceans from synthetic clothing.

McCartney knows that plastic is a big problem in the world of fashion, and he is keen to change the production curve with elements that can help modify the world problem in the manufacture of clothes. “British women buy an average of 33 million sequined clothes each holiday season, of which 1.7 million end up in landfills after being worn just five times, 35% of the microplastics released into our oceans come from synthetic clothing. Imagine if they were all made from BioSequim, we wouldn’t have such a negative percentage”, says Stella.

BioSequis are made with biodegradable and non-toxic material. “BioSequis were created from vegetable cellulose, without metals, minerals, synthetic pigments or dyes, a collaboration made with exclusive innovation by Radiant Matter”, explains the label. Radiant Matter is a startup that has been developing a new generation of material and color solutions for the circular economy. The innovation is the first lab-made sequin, designed from cellulose and innovated by a female founder.

Stella McCartney has always expressed her desire to go beyond the use of eco-friendly materials to also use bio-based materials. Surrounded by the issue, McCartney has been warning about how difficult it can be to find ornaments that are sustainable. This great achievement is really a step towards a future of sustainable and more conscious fashion.
