Suárez Navarro loses first match at Roland Garros
Carla Suárez Navarro lost her first match since her cancer diagnosis at Roland Garros on Tuesday. The Spanish tennis star had to bow out to American Sloane Stephens in the first round after a three-setter.
The 32-year-old Suárez Navarro played her last game in February last year. She then received unexplained complaints. After examination, he was diagnosed with lymph node cancer. She announced that six months later.
At the end of April, Suárez Navarro underwent her last treatment and was declared cured. She then returned to the tennis court immediately. She had already said goodbye to tennis, but would return to it if she made a full recovery.
After more than a month of preparation, Suárez Navarro appeared to have enough of two sets to deal with Stephens. But the moment she served for the match, the American broke her back and went down: 6-3, 6-7 (4) and 4-6.
Suárez Navarro won three WTA tournaments in her career and once reached sixth in the world rankings. She was the number 71 in the world at the time the disease was discovered. Currently, the global number is 118.
