After more than a month of preparation, Suárez Navarro appeared to have enough of two sets to deal with Stephens. But the moment she served for the match, the American broke her back and went down: 6-3, 6-7 (4) and 4-6.

Suárez Navarro won three WTA tournaments in her career and once reached sixth in the world rankings. She was the number 71 in the world at the time the disease was discovered. Currently, the global number is 118.
