Swedish gaming giant buys creators of Tomb Raider and Avengers, Embracer Group has entered into an agreement to purchase the game studios Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal and Square Enix Montréal. The acquisition involves 300 million dollars (more than 284 million euros), the Swedish company announced on Monday.
Crystal Dynamics is the studio behind the game Marvel’s Avengers. Eidos Montréal is known for Thief 4, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, while Square Enix Montréal has worked on Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO, among others.
Embracer also plans to acquire a slew of games, including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain. The approximately 1100 employees of the three studios are also taken over.
The deal isn’t quite done yet. This is expected to happen in the summer. Embracer has grown rapidly in recent years by acquiring dozens of studios, including THQ Nordic, Sabre Interactive and Koch Media.
When the new deal is finalized, Embracer will employ more than 14,000 employees, 10,000 of whom are game developers. The company also owns 124 studios and 230 games in development.
