Terrorists cause carnage in Burkina Faso
About 100 residents of the town of Solhan in Burkina Faso were killed by armed fighters on the night of Friday to Saturday, the government reports. It is the largest massacre in the West African country since 2015, according to local media. A 72-hour period of national mourning has been declared.
The perpetrators set fire to homes and the local market, the government said. The army has launched a manhunt for the intruders.
Burkina Faso is regularly hit by attacks by Islamic extremists in the border area between Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. They are sympathisers of IS and al Qaeda. In an attack on a village in the east of the country in early May, 30 people were killed and about 20 others were seriously injured.
The violence has left more than a million residents fleeing in the past two years. Another 20,000 refugees from Mali have fled to Burkina Faso because of the violence of jihadists.
