The 2021 American Music Awards Winners and Details

The 49th American Music Awards took place this Sunday (21) and chose the most successful artists of the year. The award ceremony took place in Los Angeles, in the United States and was hosted by rapper Cardi B.

The list of nominees was led by singer Olivia Rodrigo, who was nominated for seven categories. She was followed by The Weeknd, who had six nominations and Doja Cat, Bad Bunny and singer Giveon, with five nominations respectively.

In an online event that took place hours before the main awards show, more than 20 categories were announced, handing out prizes to stars including Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Lil Nas X.

The night's shows began with a performance by Silk Sonic, a duo featuring Bruno Mars and Anderson.Paak. And the first award of the night was Latin Album of the Year for singer Bad Bunny, who had already been chosen Latin Male Artist of the Year earlier.

Next, Machine Gun Kelly won the award for Best Rock Artist and Coldplay took the stage with BTS to perform their collaborative song, “My Universe”. The K-Pop stars also secured their first award of the night, Best Group.

Olivia Rodrigo presented her song “Traitor” and Taylor Swift won her second award of the night for the album “Evermore”which was chosen as Best Pop Album of the year. Afterwards, there were performances by Tyler, the Creator, Carrie Underwood with Jason Aldean and Bad Bunny with Tainy and Juliete Venegas, who appeared digitally.

Presenter Cardi B also secured her award of the night in the Best Hip-Hop Song category with “Up”. Between the presentations of “Beggin'”by Måneskin, “Have Mercy”by Chloë, and “On My Way”by Jennifer Lopez, BTS secured their second award of the night with the song “Butter”which won Best Pop Song.

One of the highlights of the night was the joint performance by boybands New Edition and New Kids on the Block, who recalled some of their greatest hits. Soon after, BTS made history by being the first Asian artist to win the main award of the night, Artist of the Year.

Singer Becky G was crowned Best Female Latin Artist of the year and Olivia Rodrigo won the Best New Artist award, her only victory among the seven nominations she had on the night.

The American Music Awards ended with another BTS performance, this time with the hit “Butter”consecrating K-Pop stars as the highlight of the night.
