Rampvlucht is a reality-based thriller about the Bijlmer disaster itself and “the many questions and mysterious events” that arose as a result.

The series is co-directed by Lourens Blok (known for The Story of the Netherlands ) and Edson da Conceicao ( Last Ride ).

On October 4, 1992, a Boeing 747 of the Israeli airline company El Al crashed into an apartment building in Bijlmermeer with mostly goods on board. An investigation revealed that the safety pin of one of the engines had come loose.

In the months after the disaster, residents and rescue workers became ill, after which extensive research was carried out into the cause and the consequences of the disaster itself. This eventually led to a parliamentary inquiry in 1998 about what information had been withheld.
