November has become the official shopping month for Brazilians. I know people who take advantage of this period to stock up on products for the whole year!

Brazilians, a naturally creative people, have already transformed Black Friday into Black November. From the first day of the month you will find websites offering a series of promotions.

Many of them are really advantageous, but there are those that are a little misleading – not to mention the frauds (and, yes, there are a lot of people still trying to scam them).

You've already read (this year and in recent years) a series of tips on how to avoid falling into traps on this date. Now in 2024, the federal government has decided to launch a kind of definitive guide for you to shop safely at this time of year.

A guide for the consumer

  • The document was prepared by the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon), a body linked to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
  • The text constantly cites the Consumer Protection Code (in other words, there is a set of laws that protect you when making a purchase).
  • One of the first guidelines in the booklet is that you should always research and plan in advance.
  • According to the CDC, all information offered to the consumer must be clear and truthful (Art. 6), therefore, it is your right to know whether the discount is real.

  • The guide also recommends that you check the reputation of the store you are purchasing from.
  • One way to do this is by researching whether the store's CNPJ is active and whether the company has service channels.
  • The document also asks that you always be suspicious of very high discounts – this could be a big sign of a scam.
  • The recommendation here is to check how much the same product is costing on reliable websites, in addition to using tools that show the history of values related to the item.
  • Senacon also advises consumers to pay attention to payment conditions and shipping costs, in addition to always keeping an eye on the product warranty.
  • Another valuable tip is that citizens have the right to something called “Right to repent”.
  • It is valid for up to seven days for online purchases, at no additional cost (CDC, Art. 49).
