The man who caused the accident that killed Nicki Minaj’s father has been sentenced to a year in prison, TMZ reports Wednesday. In addition to the prison sentence, his driver’s license has been confiscated for six months and he must pay a fine of 5,000 dollars (more than 4,900 euros).

Minaj’s father, Robert Maraj, died in February 2021 at the age of 64 after being hit by a car. The driver drove on without providing assistance.

Minaj’s mother Carol Maraj filed a complaint against the perpetrator of the accident in 2021. He could face up to seven years in prison. The judge decided Wednesday that the man a lot less time in the cell.

Minaj has not yet responded to the conviction. Previously, the artist described the death of her father as the “most shocking loss” of her life.
