In an interview, James Gunn, who directed and wrote The Suicide Squadstated that the film would be rated R even if he did not direct it. Since the filmmaker was writing the script for the film before even accepting to direct, he always had in mind that he was writing a war film and that he wanted to show the “true repercussions of violence”.
Speaking to IndieWireGunn said he has a strong aversion to movies that “show the impact of the bullet, but don't have blood.” He continues: “I spoke to Peter Safran, the producer, and said, 'I think this is going to be R-rated, I need to know if the studio is okay with it.'” The director says that the only way to lower the film's rating would be to make the enemy soldiers robots, but that he didn't want to do something with robots. “I wanted to make a war film.”

In addition to asking to keep the film R-rated, James Gunn made another request to Warner: that filming take place in Atlanta, Georgia, instead of the United Kingdom, as the studio initially wanted. This is because the director wanted to be close to his father.
“My father was dying and he lived in St. Louis. They wanted to film in the UK, but I couldn't do it so far away from my father.” The filmmaker's father passed away two weeks before filming began on The Suicide Squadin 2019. Not filming in the UK was a problem for the studio as it was more expensive to film in the United States, due to the taxes for filming in Georgia.
James Gunn says #TheSuicideSquad's R rating was baked in from the start, long before he even signed on to direct the film: “I don't want to make a movie with a bunch of robots, I want to make a war film.” pic.twitter.com/T5cdX1MFjx

Inspired by the group created in the 1980s, The Suicide Squad brings back some of the characters from the 2016 film, with Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman reprising their roles. However, the story does not have many connections to the plot of the first film. The film is already showing in Brazil and will be available on HBO Max on September 9.
