Right of a woman

About 121 million pregnancies worldwide are unplanned every year, according to research published by the United Nations (UN) on Thursday. That is almost half of all pregnancies.

The UN agency UNFPA, which deals with sexual health and reproduction, calls the number shocking. According to UNFPA director Natalia Kanem, it proves that the protection of women’s rights worldwide is failing.

About 60 percent of unplanned pregnancies end in abortion, according to the UN because the pregnancy is unwanted as well as unplanned. 45 percent of those abortions are said to be unsafe. Unsafe abortions account for five to 13 percent of maternal deaths.

The UN expects that conflicts such as the war in Ukraine will lead to even more unplanned pregnancies. According to the partnership of almost two hundred countries, access to contraception is declining during conflict situations and sexual violence is increasing.

Other studies show that more than 20 percent of women and girls who have fled during conflict situations have experienced sexual violence. The UN states that contraception and sexual health care save lives during conflict situations.

Few unintended (teen) pregnancies in the Netherlands

According to the RIVM, the Netherlands had the lowest abortion rate in Europe in 2020. The number of teenage pregnancies was also low.

According to the UN study, maternal mortality in the Netherlands is relatively low, with five deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. By comparison, in Sierra Leone, 1,120 mothers die per 100,000 inhabitants.

It is striking that the UN has no data on the proportion of births in the Netherlands between 2014 and 2020 involving trained medical personnel.
