The Song of Birds and Serpents”

This Wednesday (20), Lionsgate released a new trailer for the film “The Hunger Games: A Song of Birds and Snakes”, the prequel to the “Hunger Games” franchise, whose films were released between 2012 and 2015.

In the trailer, lasting just over 2 minutes and 30 seconds, we get a look at the brutality of the Hunger Games along with the protagonists, Corialanus (Tom Blyth) and Lucy (Rachel Zegler), who also give us a glimpse of their relationship to the throughout the trailer. Check it out:

Book and history

The film's plot is based on the prequel book released by Suzanne Collins in 2020 and transports us to a period called “Dark Days”, which takes place 64 years before the events of the original saga.

The book introduces us to the beginning of the journey of Coriolanus Snow (played by Donald Sutherland in the main franchise), an 18-year-old young man whose family faces dark times. His life takes an unexpected turn when he is chosen as a mentor for the Tenth Hunger Games. Reluctantly, he accepts the opportunity to mentor a young woman from District 12, Lucy Gray (Rachel Zegler's character). However, after Lucy captivates Panem's audience, Snow sees an opportunity to change their destinies. With everything he's worked for at stake, Snow teams up with Lucy Gray in an attempt to turn the odds in their favor. He faces an internal struggle between his instincts of goodness and evil and sets out on a race against time to survive and reveal whether, in the end, he will become a songbird or a snake.

The new film will be released eight years after the end of the original saga, which includes the films: “The Hunger Games” (2012), “The Hunger Games – Catching Fire” (2013), “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” (2014 ) and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – The Ending”. Jennifer Lawrence plays the protagonist Katniss Everdeen in these films.

Cast

In addition to the aforementioned Tom Blyth (“Scott and Sid”) and Rachel Zegler (“Amor, Sublime Amor”), who play Corialanus and Lucy, respectively, the cast of the new film features big names, such as Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”) as Casca Highbottom, Viola Davis (“Cross Stories”) as the cold and cruel Dr. Volumnia Gaul, Hunter Schafer (“Euphoria”) playing Tigris Snow, Jason Schwartzman (“Marie Antoinette”) playing Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman, Kjell Brutscheidt (“ZERV: Central Investigation”) is Tanner and Ashley Liao (from the new seasons of “Three is Awesome”) as Clemensia Dovecote.

Francis Lawrence, who directed the last three films in the franchise, returns to direct the new feature, which features scripts by Collins and Michael Arndt, who already wrote one of the films in the franchise: “The Hunger Games – Catching Fire” (2013).
