Sonos Sub Mini – One of the most expensive Sonos speakers now has a more affordable alternative: the Sonos Sub Mini. With that, you don’t even compromise that much on sound quality.

Sonos speakers have been high in the mid-range for years. They are quite affordable if you compare them with premium alternatives, but are less attractive if you are used to alternatives of a few hundred euros.

The company has been trying to change that for a while now. The cheapest Sonos speakers cost more than 200 euros for a long time. But since a few years Sonos has been working with IKEA, for which the manufacturer makes a cheaper variant of 100 euros.

In addition, the American company recently introduced the Sonos Ray. This soundbar of 300 euros is an alternative to the models from 500 euros.

Sonos Sub Mini is cheaper

If you wanted a Sonos home cinema set, you only came across one threshold: the subwoofer. The manufacturer has been selling this for years, but until recently only for 850 euros.

That is a considerable amount compared to the cheaper range. With the new Sonos Sub Mini, that is now changing: this smaller model costs 500 euros.

A home cinema set via Sonos is therefore suddenly interesting for many more people. To illustrate: if you bought old non-budget variants of the company, a full 5.1 installation would cost you almost 1,800 euros. But if you now choose the Sub Mini, Ray soundbar and two IKEA speakers for the back of your room, the price will not exceed 1,000 euros.

Intended for smaller rooms

But what do you get in return when you get such a cheaper subwoofer at home? We feared a significantly worse sound beforehand, but after testing this is not so bad. The Sub Mini has a solid, deep bass that you can also feel well at the highest settings. We never got the idea that something was missing because we had the small version next to the TV.

That is probably also due to the room we tested it in. According to Sonos, the Sub Mini is intended for small living rooms, bedrooms and other not too large spaces. If you have a large, open downstairs space, the manufacturer advises to get the large Sub. According to Sonos, the Mini is especially suitable in rooms of no more than 30 square meters. That’s about the area of the living room we tried it in.

The advantages of a Sonos speaker

Furthermore, nothing is missing from what you expect from a Sonos speaker. You can also connect these wirelessly to your other speakers, so you don’t have to pull a special audio cable through your room. Make sure there is a power connection in the desired position and you are in the right place. That wireless connection works especially well as long as speakers are in the same room.

You can also use your smartphone to fine-tune the sound balance. You then move it around your room like a kind of water rod while the speakers play a crazy sound. It looks a bit silly, but we noticed that our Sub Mini did sound a little better after we did this.

Conclusion

We can be simple: the cheaper subwoofer from Sonos is also just a great subwoofer. It doesn’t do anything significantly different from its predecessor, but it doesn’t really lack any features either. The only difference is in the size of rooms where you can best put it.

The Sub Mini also shows a trend at the audio manufacturer: Sonos is making its speakers cheaper and cheaper. The subwoofer is the latest move towards a more affordable home cinema set from the company, which will allow the company to better compete with some budget brands. We’re curious to see how that ends.
