The Way of Water hits $1 billion at the global box office

The feature film “Avatar: The Way of Water” hit US$1 billion at the global box office, the film, which premiered on December 15th in theaters, reached the exact mark: US$1 billion before completing two weeks that it is on display.

The number was reached on Tuesday night (27) Avatar: The Way of Water is already the third highest grossing film of 2022, and remains tied with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”. Second only to: “Jurassic World: Dominion” and “Top Gun: Maverick”, the only films to reach US$1 billion at the box office this year.

In Brazil, the repercussion surrounding “Avatar: The Way of Water” was felt in its first week on display. The film increased the weekly audience recorded by Brazilian cinemas by around 200%, according to an agreement with the website Filme B.

The second feature in the franchise is occupying most movie theaters around the world. 3D and IMAX theaters are seeing skyrocketing sales in Brazil. In its first weekend, the feature film recorded R$134 million at the box office in Brazil (2nd place went to “Noite Infeliz”, which made R$5.6 million in the same period).

James Cameron recently gave an interview to Esquire and revealed that Avatar: The Path of Water it would be much longer and would have much more violent scenes. Cameron reports that he cut shooting scenes to avoid “fetishizing guns.”

“I actually cut about 10 minutes out of the film for the shooting action,” Cameron told the outlet. “I wanted to get rid of some of the ugliness, find a balance between light and dark. You have to have conflict, of course. Violence and action are the same thing, depending on how you look at it. That’s every action filmmaker’s dilemma, and I’m known as an action filmmaker,” said the filmmaker.

The director currently lives in New Zealand, says that this changed his perspective on weapons as the country banned rifles after the attack on a mosque. Despite having announced that the feature film will feature four more sequences, Avatarfuture release will depend on the performance of Avatar: The Path of Water at the box office. Performing well, the third feature will arrive in December 2024, while Avatar 4 arrives in 2026, and Avatar 5, in 2028.
