This is how the European tickets are distributed ,

Now that the KNVB cup final is over and the last Eredivisie rounds are on the program, it is slowly becoming more clear about the distribution of the European starting tickets. An overview, including the bizarre scenario where nothing is at stake in the play-offs for European football.

Distribution of European tickets at current status

  • 1. Ajax (main tournament Champions League)
  • 2. PSV (third qualifying round Champions League)
  • 3. Feyenoord (europa league play-offs)
  • 4. FC Twente (third qualifying round Conference League)
  • 5. AZ (play-offs for second qualifying round Conference League)
  • 6. Vitesse (play-offs for second qualifying round Conference League)
  • 7. FC Utrecht (play-offs for second qualifying round Conference League)
  • 8. FC Groningen (play-offs for second qualifying round Conference League)

According to the standard distribution of European tickets, the champion enters the Champions League, the number two plays in the third Champions League preliminary round, the number three plays in the third qualifying round of the Conference League and the numbers four to seven compete in play-offs for one ticket to the second qualifying round of the Conference League.

Because of the cup win of PSV, that division is already a bit on the shift. With the acquisition of the ‘pine cone’, the people of Eindhoven are sure of a place in the play-offs of the Europa League.

It seems that PSV finishes among the first two in the Eredivisie this season.

This means that the club can play in the (preliminary rounds of the) Champions League and that the ticket for the play-offs of the Europa League moves on to the number three.

That shift also affects the clubs behind the top three. In that case, the number four of the Eredivisie is certain of the third qualifying round of the Conference League and the numbers five to eight in the play-offs compete for a ticket to the second qualifying round of the Conference League.

Feyenoord’s semi-final place in the Conference League creates extra uncertainty. If the Rotterdammers survive the semi-final battle against Olympique Marseille and win the tournament, they will qualify directly for the group stage of the Europa League.

Depending on Feyenoord’s final ranking in the Eredivisie, this has consequences for the European starting tickets of other Dutch clubs.

If Feyenoord holds the third place (a place in the first two seems unlikely), then the Dutch starting ticket for the Europa League play-offs will lapse.

So it is not the case that everything shifts and the Netherlands gets an extra European ticket if Feyenoord wins in the Conference League.

If Feyenoord finishes fourth in the Eredivisie, the number three retains the ticket for the Europa League play-offs and the numbers five to eight compete for a place in the second qualifying round of the Conference League.

In that case, the ticket for the third qualifying round of the Conference League expires.

In the unlikely event that Feyenoord finishes outside the top four in the Eredivisie, the special situation arises that the play-offs for European football do not matter. The team of Arne Slot takes by the Conference League win a European ticket and with that all tickets are divided.

The problem is that the final of the Conference League will only be played on 25 May and the play-offs for European football will start on 19 May.
