Treatment discovered for corona patients who do not produce antibodies
British researchers say they have discovered a new, promising treatment method for corona patients who cannot produce antibodies against the coronavirus themselves. Antibodies are injected into them.
The main difference with other treatment methods studied is that the immune system is not stimulated, but the virus is directly neutralized. In addition to the antibodies, patients were also given the existing steroid dexamethasone. Exactly one year ago it was announced that this drug could also be lifesaving.
According to the study, the new treatment method can help one in three people recover faster after being hospitalized due to COVID-19. The researchers argue that six lives can be saved with every 100 treatments.
In addition, patients would have to stay in a hospital for an average of four days less and the chances of needing a ventilator decrease. The method has been tested on nearly 10,000 British patients.
A small disadvantage of the treatment method is that it is quite pricey. According to BBC News, the treatment costs between £1,000 and £2,000 (£1,100 to £2,325).
