United States President-elect Donald Trump said he respected the court's decision, while a hearing in his bribery case in New York is scheduled for Friday morning (10). The Supreme Court ruled this Thursday (09) that Trump could be sentenced, rejecting his request to postpone the process. The sentence comes just days before his inauguration, scheduled for January 20, when he will assume his second term.

The decision, reached by a close vote of 5 to 4, revealed divisions within the Supreme Court. Conservative Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh sided with Trump, while Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined the three liberal justices in rejecting the delay request.

After the decision, Trump declared that the case is still far from being resolved. “We will appeal, as this is a shame. The judge should never be in this case.”he said at Mar-a-Lago. Despite this, Trump reaffirmed his respect for the court's ruling and suggested the appeal could address broader issues.

Controversial payment and problems in government transition

The case in question involves Trump's conviction for falsifying business records related to his payment of $130,000 to attorney Michael Cohen, which was used to silence Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress, over an alleged affair before the 2016 election. . Trump denies involvement with Daniels and argues that the conviction should not be valid, as the evidence is not linked to his duties as president.

Trump's lawyers told the Supreme Court that the sentence could interfere with the government transition and national security. However, New York prosecutors countered, saying the president-elect did not present enough evidence to support that claim. Alvin Bragg, Manhattan district attorney, emphasized the public interest in proceeding with the sentencing, arguing that the hearing should last no more than an hour and could be held virtually.

When will Donald Trump assume the US presidency

Donald Trump, aged 78, was elected the 47th president of the United States on November 6, 2024. He won the election with 312 votes in the Electoral College, against 226 votes for his opponent Kamala Harris, with the delegates following the results of the popular vote .
