Turkey vs Italy, Head coach Senol Günes drop his comment

Head coach Senol Günes had expected Turkey to have been able to offer much more opposition to Italy on Friday night despite the underdog position. However, the Turks had little to say in the opening game of the European Championship and went down 3-0 at Stadio Olimpico.

“We knew we were playing against a strong team, but we expected a better result,” Günes said at his press conference in Rome. “The game didn’t go the way we envisioned it. Italy was much more dominant than we were.” (Turkey vs Italy)

In the first half, defensively minded Turkey were spared a counter-attack, but after half-time Italy were rewarded for their attacking intentions. Merih Demiral nettped the opening goal in the 53rd minute with an own goal, then Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne extended the margin to three later in the second half.

“We lost the ball way too often and that’s why we helped Italy in the saddle,” Günes quied. “After the first goal we got distracted and lost control of the game. I’m not happy with the result, but I expected a better game.”

The comprehensive defeat to Italy means Turkey can hardly afford a misstep in the battle for a place in the round of 16. Günes’ team continues the tournament on Wednesday with a game against Wales in Baku and concludes the group stage on Sunday 20 June in the Azerbaijani capital against Switzerland.

‘Against Italy we couldn’t control the game and physically we weren’t good either. Because of this defeat, the games against Wales and Switzerland will be very important and we are now going to focus on that,” he said.
