Ukraine uses facial recognition to identify Russians and bodies

Ukraine’s defense ministry began deploying facial recognition from Clearview AI last weekend, Reuters writes . The American start-up had offered its technology to expose Russian attackers, fight disinformation and identify bodies.

Ukraine gets free access to Clearview’s search engine, which authorities can use to screen people at checkpoints, for example. Clearview will not offer the technology to Russia and calls the aid in Ukraine a “special operation”.

The company says it has a database of more than two million photos of faces, sourced from the Russian social network VKontakte. It is not known how many Ukrainian faces are in the system.

The Ukrainian ministry has not yet responded to questions about how the technology will be deployed. Earlier, a spokesperson said it was considering deploying companies such as Clearview.

Clearview is a controversial company, whose technology has already been labeled illegal in several countries. It takes pictures of faces from social media without asking permission.

Clearview says it has the right to do so, because it only uses public data.

But companies such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook have previously demanded that Clearview delete the collected data.

Although the company claims it can do a lot in Ukraine, such as identifying bodies and bringing refugees together, critics are hesitant.
