Ukrainian army pushes Russians back west of Kyiv

The Ukrainian army seems to be having success here and there. According to the British, the Ukrainians have recaptured two towns west of Kyiv and the encirclement of Russian troops near Kyiv appears “a real possibility”.

The battle that the Ukrainian army is fighting around the capital Kyiv appears to be successful, the British Ministry of Defense reports. The Ukrainian army has recaptured two cities, according to the British: the small town of Makariv, about 50 kilometers west of Kyiv, and Moschun, just northwest of Kyiv.

In Bucha and Irpin, two towns just outside Kyiv, the British army says there is a “real” chance that Russian troops could be surrounded.

Ukrainian forces are increasing pressure on Russian troops northeast of Kyiv. The Russian army is facing “considerable logistical and moral problems” on that flank, the British said.

Britain is sending 6,000 more missiles to Ukraine, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday. These include anti-tank weapons, of which Britain has already supplied 4,200 to Ukraine, according to British media.

To further support the Ukrainian army, London is sending 25 million British pounds (almost 30 million euros).

Johnson says of the latest delivery that his country wants to “strengthen Ukraine’s defenses as the tide turns”.

The additional aid to Ukraine was announced on the eve of three summits for which US President Joe Biden traveled to Brussels: an emergency NATO meeting, a meeting with G7 leaders and a European Council meeting. Biden arrived in Europe on Wednesday.

The US embassy in Moscow on Wednesday received a list of names of diplomats who have been forced to leave Russia. The move is said to be in response to the expulsion of Russian personnel from the United Nations in New York last month. It is unclear how many American diplomats will have to leave Russia.

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna calls on the West to stop importing gas, oil and coal from Russia. That subject is on the agenda of the EU summit today, but European countries are divided. “I understand that this decision is difficult.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasizes that her country hopes that the EU countries will take the hardest possible measures. “The Russian aggression is not directed against Ukraine, but against Europe, everyone should realize that,” she says.

And President Zelensky is asking the whole world to take to the streets on Thursday, a month after the start of the Russian invasion, and show solidarity with his people.

In a video Zelensky posted online Wednesday evening, he asked people in English to support Ukraine and advocate for his country’s freedom.

The president called for a worldwide protest and called on people to come to their squares and streets. “Make yourself visible and make yourself heard.” He said that “the world must stop this war”.

According to Zelensky, Russia is not only fighting a struggle with Ukraine, but a struggle “against the freedom of everyone in Europe, of everyone in the world”.
