Understand the risks of PMMA, an application that caused swelling in Maíra Cardi
– how to remain healthy, health related news, latest symptoms and treatments.

Last Tuesday (05), influencer Maíra Cardi revealed the consequences of an unsuccessful PMMA and the consequences, such as not being able to get pregnant due to the treatment, and facing swelling on her cheek. The substance polymethylmethacrylate presents serious health risks.

Risks of polymethyl methacrylate

The procedure carried out by influencer Máira Cardi consists of applying polymethyl methacrylate (known as PMMA) which is normally used in procedures to enlarge the buttocks and/or to correct small deformities caused by loss of facial fat. However, this compound is plastic and can be harmful to health.

In a video shared on her social networks, she responded to a theory from her followers about a supposed pregnancy, she said that she was not pregnant, but that she had undergone a polymethylmethacrylate application procedure and had rejected the substance.

Thanks to the treatment she is undergoing, Maíra said she cannot get pregnant and is dealing with several swellings on her face. In addition to this case, it is worth mentioning Aline Maria Ferreira, another influencer who performed the aesthetic procedure and ended up dying after rejection in July of this year.

Anvisa only allows use in cases of facial and body volumetric correction. Therefore, it is not recommended for large procedures, as the material is a plastic compound and is permanent (the substance adheres to muscles and bones and therefore its use is considered permanent).

According to the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP), the procedure is ''extremely dangerous'' and should not be used for aesthetic purposes.

SBCP notes on the use of PMMA

“Although the product is sold in our country, it can cause early and late complications that are difficult to resolve. Among the complications we can mention: nodules, masses and inflammatory and infectious processes, causing disastrous and irreversible aesthetic and functional damage.” rstates the SBCP note.

The note on PMMA also states that: “According to reports in scientific studies, the most serious complications, such as necrosis, blindness, embolisms and deaths, are more frequent with this product than with absorbable fillers''.

Anvisa is concerned about the inappropriate use of PMMA and reinforces that, in the case of use, the procedure must be carried out by properly trained professionals.
