Understand the transmission of Mpox and identify the groups at greatest risk
– how to remain healthy, health related news, latest symptoms and treatments.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection that has been a concern for health authorities around the world. Although it was discovered in 1958 in monkeys, the disease predominantly affects humans, especially in recent outbreaks. With symptoms similar to those of human smallpox, mpox can cause fever, rashes, muscle aches and exhaustion.

Ways of transmission of Mpox

Transmission of mpox occurs mainly through close contact with infected people. The virus can spread through bodily fluids, respiratory secretions and direct contact with lesions on the skin of an infected person. It is also possible to contract the virus by handling objects or surfaces that have come into contact with the lesions, such as bed linen or towels. An important form of contagion that has been highlighted in recent outbreaks is sexual transmission, with cases being more frequent in men who have sex with men (MSM), although the disease is not restricted to this group.

The disease can be transmitted through contact with infected people or through contact with infected animals, such as rodents and primates. Despite the wide range of transmission methods, the risk of contagion is considered moderate in common environments, as long as hygiene and prevention measures are followed.

Higher risk groups

Certain population groups are more vulnerable to mpox. Men who have sex with men are one of the groups most affected by recent outbreaks, due to the sexual transmission method. In addition, individuals with compromised immune systems, such as people living with HIV, are also at greater risk, experiencing more severe symptoms if infected.

Another group that deserves attention includes healthcare workers, who may be exposed to the virus when caring for infected patients. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is crucial to prevent transmission in hospitals.
