Unprecedented study may explain resistance of some people to Covid-19
– how to remain healthy, health related news, latest symptoms and treatments.

Last Wednesday (19), a new study led by the Wellcome Sanger Institute, and involving other institutions, discovered the reason why some people do not become infected with Covid-19. The research was the first in the world to infect volunteers with the virus.

Study with 36 infected volunteers

The research was carried out with 36 volunteers who were fully exposed to the virus. The researchers injected the Sars-Cov-2 virus into the noses of those involved who were completely healthy and had no history of Covid-19.

The lining of the nose and blood were closely monitored to check that there was no infection and how immune cells were reacting. Of the 36 volunteers, six developed the infection.

In the study, a technology was used that allowed single-cell sequencing to be tracked for a set of 600,000 individual cells. In the study, researchers found that people who did not develop the virus presented immune responses that had not yet been discovered, which allowed resistance to increase.

From the discovery, researchers were able to understand and study the new cells that involved this protection.

The analysis

According to the analysis, published in the scientific journal Nature, some people may present unique immune responses that can help with immunity. These immunological responses showed that some volunteers, instead of presenting a typical generalized immune response, actually presented immune responses that had not yet been identified by nose science.

The researchers also point out that there is a probability that these volunteers who became immune had a high level of a gene called HLA-DQA before being exposed to the viruses, which may have given the volunteer even more immunity.

According to Marko Nikolic, senior author of the study at UCL, the study was very important for a much greater understanding of the range of immune responses, which now allows the development of studies of treatments and vaccines that can produce positive responses against the disease.
