With stricter supervision, orders may be delayed, but smuggling of Asian products will also be avoided. This is an inspection of a new campaign that the USA will carry out on customs brokers who handle billions of dollars in packages. It is low-cost orders from Asian platforms such as Shein and Temu that are likely to cause delays in their deliveries, according to claims from industry experts.

Suspended companies

Last week, several brokers were suspended from an accelerated release program for imports that happen directly to the consumer, which is tax-exempt, one of the reasons being the impossibility of smuggling into the country.

Customs experts already know of at least six suspended companies, although the agency has not revealed exactly how many. Inspections of parcels at US airports and also the review of electronic information sent by customs brokers, in which customs agencies have been making efforts to intensify inspection.

More than 1 billion orders

Chad Schofield, co-founder of e-commerce logistics platform BoxC, said: โ€œAll ports of entry are being affected, so there is really no way to avoid delaysโ€.

The containment comes with the forecast that more than a billion orders worth US$50 each, on average, will arrive in the USA in 2024, due to the great demand from North American consumers in search of various Chinese products.

The accelerated release process ends up creating a dependency for Shein, which aims to expand its market share and also open capital and the retailer Temu, making direct remittances worth US$800 or even less available to the consumer.

Shipment information is sent electronically to US customs by brokers and thus speeds up the process. Cindy Allen, Executive Chairman of Trade Force Multiplier, said: โ€œCustoms brokers who participate in this program handle 62% of these shipments an administrative bus that would otherwise fall to exporters and transport companies.โ€ This measure could influence several aspects in the USA, as it happens precisely in an election year.
