vaccination program new decision
Janssen’s (Johnson & Johnson) corona vaccine has been dropped from Denmark’s official vaccination program. The Danish authorities have decided not to use the drug because in rare cases it can cause blood clots.
However, according to the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet , it will be possible to have yourself vaccinated voluntarily with Janssen or AstraZeneca. Denmark had stopped using the latter after similar blood problems had developed in a few people after vaccination.
The Janssen vaccine was intended to play a major role in the vaccination of the Danish population, also because only one shot is needed. The authorities had ordered most doses from Janssen. It is therefore feared that the vaccination will be delayed. The Janssen vaccine should especially have accelerated the vaccination of younger Danes.
In the Netherlands, the vaccine from Janssen from Leiden is used. The first groups to receive the drug are hospital employees and clients and employees of institutions in mental health care (mental health care).
The government’s corona dashboard estimates that nearly 40,000 people have been given that vaccine to date. In the course of this week, this number should increase to more than 80,000 people and by the end of May almost 160,000 Dutch people should have received the Janssen vaccine. Janssen should deliver about three million doses in the months of April, May and June, enough to vaccinate as many people.

What is the risk of rare blood problems after inoculation with the Janssen vaccine?
- In the United States, eight cases of a rare form of thrombosis are known after approximately seven million Janssen injections.
- In all cases it concerned persons under the age of sixty. Of the eight persons who developed this clinical picture, the majority were women.
- The European Medicines Agency (EMA) was unable to determine whether women are actually more at risk for this side effect. In all reported cases, the clinical picture developed within three weeks after vaccination.
- One dose of the Janssen vaccine is enough to protect a person from COVID-19.
