Verstappen resents third time

Max Verstappen was upset by his third time saturday in qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Dutch driver of Red Bull Racing also denounced the many crashes on the street circuit in Baku.

Qualifying was halted four times due to crashes by Lance Stroll, Antonio Giovinazzi (both in Q1), Daniel Ricciardo (Q2) and Yuki Tsunoda (Q3). The latest incident prevented Verstappen from chasing pole position in his last run and finished third behind Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

“What a stupid qualification. Everything looked good, but with all that shit here, again in Q3. I just didn’t have a slipstream to the line, which the other two did,” Verstappen said in an initial response, after which the interviewer apologized for the Limburger’s language.

“Anyway, it is what it is. It’s just unfortunate. It’s a street circuit, so this could happen. At least we recovered well from the crash in the third free practice. Third place is not very bad; we are still there, but of course I would have liked to have been further forward.” (Verstappen resents third time)

Verstappen must fear losing his lead in the World Championship standings due to his third place. He is five points ahead of Mercedes’ Hamilton, who was very slow in training.

“I’m looking forward to the fight with Lewis. I hope for a good start and from there we will see. You saw today that a lot can happen here and maybe that’s the case again in the race,” Verstappen said.

“The car felt good in the longruns during the training sessions. But in the race, it’s going to be a different story. Good tracking is super loady here, because if you are close behind another car, you burn your tires.”

The race in Baku starts at 2pm on Sunday. Verstappen has never won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which was not held last year due to the corona crisis. The last winner was Valtteri Bottas, who finished only 10th in qualifying on Saturday.
