Vivianne Miedema will not behave differently as the new captain of orange

Miedema Vivianne will not behave differently now that she is the new captain of the Oranjevrouwen. The star player takes over the band from Sari van Veenendaal, who dropped out on Monday due to a shoulder injury.

On the day that Miedema finally got the band, she sounds like a captain during the digital press moment. She condemns the hugging of some teammates with their family in the stadium, shows sympathy for the unfortunate Van Veenendaal and tells what the (temporary) loss of Van Veenendaal, Jackie Groenen (corona infection) and Aniek Nouwen (ankle injury) has done to the group.

But, Miedema emphasizes, she does not behave differently now that she is the new captain of the Oranjevrouwen. “I have a bond on, but that’s not going to change me,” she says. “I don’t think you should, because then you’re not the right captain.”

For Miedema, the leadership role is not new either. She was captain a few times under the previous national coach Sarina Wiegman and was in the “captain group”. “As a result, I am not a complete stranger to the bite.” It is striking that she has now been preferred to Sherida Spitse, who was the captain in the past.

Miedema was appointed as second captain by national coach Mark Parsons just before the start of the preparation for the European Championship. “Since Mark has been here, I’ve been talking a lot about football, development and the future.”

After all the setbacks in less than 24 hours – the loss of Van Veenendaal, the injury of Nouwen and the corona infection of Groenen – the preparations for the game against Portugal started on Monday morning. The Netherlands will play against the Portuguese on Wednesday.

“I hope we can put everything aside and just use it as extra motivation.” In front of a computer screen in the players’ hotel, Miedema uses the umpteenth text of a captain.
