Do you feel a lump in your breast or are you in pain? Know that most breast conditions are harmless. But which symptoms do point to breast cancer? An overview.

Possible symptoms of breast cancer

Although breast cancer is not common in men, men who notice changes in one of their breasts should also see a doctor. The following symptoms should be reported to a doctor as soon as possible:

a lump or unusual swelling of the breast that persists after menstruation
a lump or unusual swelling under the armpit
unusual changes in the nipple (flaking, permanently inverted nipple, thickening, discharge of blood or other fluid from the nipple)
retractions (dimples) or folds in the skin of the breast. Sometimes the skin is thickened and shows dimples, like an orange peel
blotchy, red rash (erythema) on the chest
a wound on the skin that does not heal

Breast cancer is usually not accompanied by pain. However, if you have constant pain in (one of) your breasts, be sure to discuss this with your GP.

Even if you have one or more of these symptoms, it does not mean that you have breast cancer. In many cases, it will be a benign swelling. Only medical examination can reveal whether the change is benign or malignant.
