What is a doula?

A doula is (usually) a woman who guides and supports a pregnant woman and her loved ones during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. The doula can be a person you already know, but you can also call on a professional doula. A doula offers the parents stability through her involvement and customized support for a few months. She gives practical tips but also guides the expectant parents on an emotional level.

No midwife

A doula is not a midwife. She never performs a medical act (use of medical equipment, examination, etc.) and never assumes medical responsibilities. Her guidance is complementary to that of the midwife or the doctor and does not replace any medical follow-up of the mother during pregnancy and childbirth.

How much does a doula cost?

Each doula applies personal rates that she determines herself. She can adapt to the financial situation of each family. Some doulas prefer a total rate for all appointments before, during and after the birth. Some health insurance companies contribute to the costs, for which it is best to inquire in advance with your health insurance company. Whether you need a doula depends entirely on your wishes. Do you feel that you could use some emotional support in addition to the medical guidance of your doctor and midwife? Or do you often worry about everything you still have to arrange?
