Many people have said that OpenAI, the golden child of the generative AI sector, is suffering a brain drain. But the recent departures of CTO Mira Murati and AI safety champion Miles Brundage reflect more than internal disagreements: they reveal a deeper shift in the organization's priorities.
The company started with the mission of developing technology for the public benefit, but now it is simply running a race to dominate the market. As its business side accelerates, its human governance – the oversight, creativity and judgment that only people can provide – is being pushed aside.

These departures highlight a deeper challenge: The rush to commercialize technology often puts governance at risk. The dissolution of the “IAG readiness team” – tasked with managing artificial general intelligence risks – raises serious concerns.
IAG systems, which could eventually act autonomously across sectors, may seem far away, but the time to prepare is now. If these risks are not addressed in advance, it will be more difficult to implement security protocols in the future.

IBM developed AI governance guidelinessuch as AI FactSheets, to ensure transparency in how algorithms operate. Their decision to abandon facial recognition technology due to bias concerns reflects a willingness to sacrifice market opportunities for the sake of ethical responsibility.
Similarly, Microsoft's Aether committee (an internal AI and ethics committee that does research and provides recommendations on responsible AI issues), along with the Office of Responsible AIincorporates ethics into engineering processes, ensuring that oversight is integrated into product development from the beginning.
However, both have also faced challenges: IBM has been criticized for a lack of clarity about how some of its AI healthcare tools, such as Watson, work. Microsoft has faced privacy concerns about data handling practices in its cloud services and ethical dilemmas regarding the use of AI in defense projects.
These examples show that governance is not a one-time achievement, it is an ongoing effort that requires constant adaptation and prioritization on the part of leaders. OpenAI leadership should adopt a similar stance of transparency and provide external oversight to ensure its technology is aligned with public trust.
TRUST IS THE CURRENCY OF INNOVATION
The OpenAI case also demonstrates how trust is vital for innovation.
In the world of AI, trust is not optional, it is essential. Companies that lose public trust—like Meta, which faced backlash for privacy violations and misinformation—often struggle to recover.
Human leadership is needed to ensure that AI meets society's needs without perpetuating problems.
With the European Union advancing its AI Law, companies face increasing pressure to demonstrate responsibility. Without that trust, technologies like OpenAI may not be able to gain the adoption and regulatory support to be successful.
The turmoil in OpenAI's leadership threatens to erode the trust it has built. If talent continues to leave and security concerns go unaddressed, the company risks becoming a case in point: a reminder that even the most advanced technology can fail without responsible leadership that champions the human beings who drive it.
The future of AI will not be defined by the speed of innovation. It will be shaped by the integrity, courage and responsibility of the people who lead it. OpenAI still has a chance to be a market leader, but only if it embraces governance not as an obligation, but rather as the compass that ensures technology serves humanity – and not the other way around.
