At the end of August, #FreeWDW became popular on social media as Billboard announced that Randy Phillips and David Loeffler, businessmen responsible for Why Don't We's careers, were in a legal dispute over the control of the company in which they were partners. Randy, in the lawsuit, accused David of having “torturous behavior” towards the band members, who are now between 20 and 23 years old, but began their careers in the group around the ages of 15 and 18.
Fans, friends and family of the boy band's boys flooded the Twitter timeline with videos, photos and reports that proved the mistreatment suffered by each of them, from restricted and unregulated eating, sleeping under a bed, being trapped inside the house and recording without full health conditions.

On September 10, the band spoke about the case on their social networks, confirming everything that happened for years with Loeffler in control of their career. “We were 15 to 18 when Why Don't We started. We were young, impressionable, and trusting, the result of growing up in loving, supportive families. While we were initially excited to live in a house together, and work together on what we loved to do most, our music, little did we know that we would eventually become prisoners of the “Why Don't We Compound”, under the supervision of one of our agents at Signature Entertainment Partners. He not only lived with us during the day, but controlled us 24/7, setting an alarm that would go off if any door or window was opened. Needless to say, we were not given the code to deactivate the alarm, making us hostage in our own home. Food was restricted to the point that some band members developed eating disorders. We had to sneak food in and hide everything in our closets. We were verbally reprimanded almost every day and isolated from our families and friends.” says a part of the published report.
However, in the early hours of this Friday (17), Why Don't We's misadventure had signs of having a happy ending. Through the group's official Instagram account and also tweets from the members' personal accounts, they suggested that the legal battle against David was won by them and Randy Phillips. In the published print, Randy tells the boys: “Guys, I just got some much needed good news, we are cleared to start releasing music. WDW is back! FINALLY!!!” and received cheers from Jonah, Corbryn, Jack, Zach and Daniel in response.
