Portugal dreams out loud of the first world title in history after reaching the World Cup in Qatar. The Portuguese were 2-0 too strong for North Macedonia in the World Cup play-offs on Tuesday and therefore qualified for the global final tournament.

“We all have expectations for the World Cup,” said national coach Fernando Santos after the game. “We have a dream that we want to achieve.

This team has already managed to bring Portugal two titles: the European title and the Nations League. We believe it is possible to bring enormous joy to the 11 million Portuguese again.”

Defender Pepe also thinks that Portugal can participate for the overall victory. “You can dream. We have proven that we can work hard and are mentally strong. We have players with a great future, so anything is possible.”

Portugal had a relatively easy evening against North Macedonia. After more than half an hour of play, Bruno Fernandes opened the score in Porto on a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo, after which the same Fernandes secured the World Cup ticket for Portugal in the 65th minute.

North Macedonia never shot on target.

“Goal achieved,” writes Ronaldo, who did not appear to the press afterwards, on Instagram . “We’re going to the World Cup in Qatar, we’re going to where we belong. Thank you to all the Portuguese for their unconditional support. Go Portugal!”

Pepe: ‘Unjustified if we weren’t allowed to go to the World Cup’

Fernandes was decisive for Portugal with two goals, but the Manchester United playmaker did not want to take all the credit afterwards. “The most important thing is that Portugal won.”

“Of course everyone has ambition, Cristiano and I are no exception. Usually he scores and I give the assist, but now it was the other way around. I’m not necessarily here to score, but to help.”

Pepe: “We wanted to give this joy to the people. We have players with a lot of quality and it would have been unfair not to go to the World Cup. We knew how to set up.”

Portugal disappears on Friday in the Qatari capital Doha as group head in the tube for the World Cup draw, which will be held at 6 p.m.

As a result, the 2016 European champion can become one of the three opponents of the Dutch national team in the group stage. Orange is in pot 2.
