Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects between 5% and 8% of the world's population, including around 2 million Brazilians, according to the Brazilian Attention Deficit Association (ABDA). Recognized as a neurodevelopmental disorder by the Ministry of Health, ADHD can make daily activities such as studying and completing tasks difficult, especially in children and adolescents.

Research published in the Brazilian Journal of Sports Medicine revealed that the practice of yoga can be an effective tool in controlling the symptoms of ADHD, such as inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. In the study “Yoga for emotional control in children with ADHD”, 30 children diagnosed with the disorder participated in 20 yoga sessions, held twice a week. The results, evaluated using the Conner scale, showed a significant improvement in the participants' emotional regulation. “Yoga training has been shown to be an easy and cost-effective method to improve the mental and physical condition of children with ADHD,” the research concludes.

Nanda Roveda, yoga teacher and founder of the SOUL Ashtanga Yoga school in Curitiba, highlights that calming the mind is one of the main objectives of the practice. “Regardless of the modality, whether more active like Ashtanga or more passive like Yin, we control breathing, eye focus and concentrate on different things within a single intense bodily activity, which calms the mind and makes us focus on the present moment ”, he explains in a note.

The practice of yoga is accessible to people of all ages, from babies to the elderly. According to Roveda, classes are adapted according to age group. “With children, classes are more playful, including games, postures in pairs and activities that encourage participation, breathing and relaxation. With adults and the elderly, the practices are more intense and focused, respecting individual limits”, he explains.

In addition to helping with focus, reducing stress and anxiety, yoga offers a series of physical benefits, such as improving physical conditioning, relieving chronic pain, controlling blood pressure, improving blood circulation and reducing PMS symptoms.

Ashtanga Yoga, a more dynamic practice, is also effective in strengthening muscles and developing resistance and flexibility. Roveda adds: “It is a fluid practice, where the breath guides the movement, keeping the mind focused on the present.”
