Four police officers were arrested for assisting the allegedly king of illegal mining chief James Neo Tshoaeli to escape custody in Stilfontein, northwest.
The Brig Brig Athlenda National Police Gate Mathenda said Tshoaeli, known as Tiger, resurfaced from Shaft 11 on Stilfontein on January 15, but never reached police cells.
“The four police officers were arrested by the SAPS anti -corruption unit in connection with their release from legal custody,” said Mathe.
The miners who talked to Sowetan described Tshoaeli as a “cruel” and “cruel” figure who allegedly exerted full control over miners, often using fear and violence to maintain their power.
It is said that Tshoaeli has controlled access to underground food and medicines, using violence to enforce his government. Her reign of terror would have involved physical abuse, manipulation and exploitation, with reports of him assaulting people with a Sjambok or other implements.
