Ministry of Justice disallows the use of handcuffs on deportees from the USA

By order of President Lula, the Minister of Justice and Public Security Ricardo Lewandowski disallowed the use of handcuffs and chains on Brazilians deported of the United States. The order came from a question of sovereignty, and that in Brazil no one chains Brazilians.

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security informed the press that Ricardo Lewandowski's guidelines regarding the reception of Brazilians have already been informed to the Federal Police and the North American authorities.

The order given by President Lula came after a plane with 158 people deported from the USA landed in Manaus, the passengers were chained and handcuffed. The use of handcuffs was prohibited, as the deportees are free citizens of Brazil. The nationality of all passengers was not informed, but according to Itamaraty 88 they are Brazilians.

American authorities were waiting for another plane from the United States to head to Confins airport, in Minas Gerais, but the government was warned and sent a plane from the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) to fly from Manaus to Belo Horizonte. The passengers were happy with the news that the FAB carried out the transport and the use of handcuffs was unauthorized.

The flight

The first flight transporting those deported during Donald Trump's second term arrived on Friday afternoon (24) in Manaus. The flight's destination was Belo Horizonte, with a connection in the capital of Amazonas, but the plane needed to undergo maintenance and the flight to Minas Gerais was cancelled, according to reports the problem with the aircraft was the air conditioning.
