Mbappé informs PSG that he will leave the club in 2024

According to the newspapers L’Equipe, New York Times and the journalist specialized in the football market Fabrizio Romano, Kylian Mbappé is in his last year at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The player sent a letter to the club, formalizing his decision not to trigger the automatic renewal clause of his contract for another season. Therefore, he is expected to leave the team in June 2024.

The news of Mbappé’s intention not to comply with the agreement by 2025 had already been released by the L’Equipe some days ago. Now the striker has made his wish official, taking PSG’s board of directors by surprise. The French player will only be able to sign a pre-contract with other clubs in January 2024, if the automatic renewal is not triggered.

PSG stayed “surprised and frustrated” with the news and now sees himself with two options in the face of Mbappé’s posture: negotiating him in the current transfer window to avoid losing him without financial compensation, or drawing up a new contract with the star.

Last year, Mbappé renewed his contract with PSG, when he was on the verge of moving to Real Madrid. Having the highest salary in football at the time, the French club ended up convincing the player to extend the bond between him and the team for approximately two years, and could renew the contract for another season. Publicly, the striker posed in shirts that displayed the year 2025, but has now expressed his desire not to remain at the club until then.

This news comes days after viralizing a video in which the president of the Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, is asked by fans if he will sign Mbappé. Perez replied: “Yes, but not this year.”

Recently, when asked about his future, Mbappé limited himself to saying that he would serve the last year of his contract by receiving the best player award in the French Championship. He avoided talking about any decision beyond that and didn’t even mention the additional option in the contract with PSG.

In October last year, shortly after renewing his contract, reports emerged in the French press about Mbappé’s dissatisfaction at PSG. The player felt betrayed by some unfulfilled promises after signing the new agreement. Although the club’s board promptly denied this information, Mbappé did not deny his dissatisfaction.

In April of this year, the striker publicly expressed his disapproval of a PSG campaign in which he was the protagonist. Mbappé stated that the team was not just “Kylian Saint-Germain”, suggesting that only his image was being valued.

Currently, Mbappé is with the French national team and this Friday he will face Gibraltar for the third round of Group B of the qualifiers of the euro cup.
