João Donato wins tribute from radios

Brazilian popular music has lost one of its biggest names, John Donato, on July 17. And to pay homage to him, Cultura radio stations present the unprecedented special João Donato – simple and ingenious. It airs on Saturday, 22nd, at 6 pm, on Rádio Cultura FM, and on Sunday, 23rd, at noon, on Rádio Cultura Brasil.

Composer, arranger, singer and instrumentalist, Donato started in music at the time of Bossa Nova and remained active until his death. He had as partners names like João Gilberto, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Arnaldo Antunes, Céu, Jards Macalé, Chico Buarque, Tom Jobim, among many others.

Born in Rio Branco, Acre, João Donato de Oliveira Neto was born on August 17, 1934 and died in Rio de Janeiro, aged 88. On the day of his death, Caetano Veloso wrote on his social networks about Donato’s music: “The highest achievement of extreme complexity in extreme simplicity”.
