The investigation focused on two characteristics and practices in fresh produce markets.
The scope of the survey focused on five fruits – apples, citrus fruits (particularly oranges and soft citrus fruits), bananas, pears and table grapes; and six vegetables – potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, tomatoes and spinach.
Ratshisusu said the absence of clear prices for fresh produce based on weight, such as per kilogram, undermines fair competition.
“Retailers, namely Shoprite Checkers, Pick n Pay, Woolworths, SPAR Group, Food Lover's Market and Massmart, must display prices per 100 grams. The price of the weight must be displayed in such a way that the consumer can easily identify it,” he said.
The survey also highlighted small and emerging farmers' limited access to formal retail channels, national fresh produce markets, and concerns of slow transformation among fresh produce market players.
