Shigeru Miyamoto Says Mario Movie Surpassed His Expectations
“I had a certain level of expectation that this movie would do well too (like the Super Nintendo World theme park), but I was very surprised that it went beyond what I could have imagined when it finally opened,” he said.
“You need a bit of luck to achieve that level of success for a film,” he added. “Although many foreign critics gave the film relatively low ratings, I think this also contributed to the film’s notoriety and buzz.”
“I would be happy if viewers could say that the definition of what a movie is has changed because of this movie. It just shows how lucky we were.”
“Since we were making this film in both Japan and the United States, we thought we should make a Japanese version as well,” said Miyamoto.
“What I usually say is that in games we should value stories ‘as if they were real stories, even if they aren’t’. They are completely fictional, but I think they seem almost real because there is some element of reality in them. This also goes for dramas. When I see that the most important part, which is making it seem like ‘a true story’, is done carelessly, I am disappointed”.
“So when we decided to make this film, we discussed creating a unique Japanese script from the ground up. Even if we were shown a script in English, it would be difficult to understand the subtle nuances.”
Super Mario Bros: The Movie is very close to reaching the $ 1 billion mark at the box office. His debut in Japan will definitely help in this process.
