How to put a password on a folder on a Windows PC or laptop

Time needed: 5 minutes

1. Find the desired file

   The first step is to browse through your computer's library and look for the folder you want to password protect;

2. Select the correct option

   Then, right-click on the folder and select the “Properties” option;

3. Choose the right button

   Among the available options, select the “Advanced” button;

4. Check the text box

   The menu below will ask for a specific demarcation: select “Encrypt contents to secure data” and click “Ok”;

5. Make a safe backup

   Three options will be available: back up now, back up later, and never back up. Click on the first option to back up now and follow the steps. This is important because you will receive an encrypted key that will prevent you from losing access to the folder even if you forget the password;

6. Confirm some settings

   Click the “Next” button twice without changing anything to ensure that the settings are in line with what the system recommends;

7. Save a password

   Click the checkbox next to the word “Password” and enter your password in the two subsequent text fields. Then, select “Next”;

8. Complete the process

   Choose the backup location and select the “Save” button. Then, select the “Next” button to verify the export and then click “Finish”. Finally, open the location where the folder is located and you will see that it is protected by a yellow padlock.
